Reza Pahlavi talks democracy, but his supporters shout monarchy. From 'Shah is Eternal' chants to the proud display of SAVAK symbols—the Shah’s brutal secret police—the movement’s actions contradict its leader's words. Can a 'democratic' transition be built on the symbols of past torture and repression?
CPAC’s recent convention was held in Grapevine, Texas, this past week, with hundreds of Pahlavi’s own crowd present just for his speech, making noise and leaving immediately. The event gave a realistic scene of what Pahlavi stands for and who his base is.
Farsi-speaking people with flags of Iran, Israel, and the United States were seen gathered densely in the hallways, turning this conservative convention into a rally scene while loudly repeating ‘King Reza Pahlavi.” Reza Pahlavi, the son of a deposed dictator who was swept out of power by millions of Iranians in a genuine revolution, continuously thanked his supporters, who called him the King, and chanted the fascist slogan of “King is eternal.”
However, there were other Iranian Americans at CPAC who believed in freedom and democracy, not in monarchical dictatorship, and rejected Reza Pahlavi as the symbol of Iran’s dark past, and entirely out of touch with Iranians who seek a pluralistic, democratic future.
Ironically, Pahlavi supporters were spying on the Iranian Americans at the conference who were speaking with the media. They repeatedly intimidated the pro-democracy voices and threatened them that they should either chant for Reza Pahlavi or be silenced.
Mona, a participant in the CPAC convention and a believer in grassroots movements in Iran for democracy, found herself being physically followed by Pahlavi supporters in the convention center. On what has been captured on video, a staunch supporter of Reza Pahlavi, threatens her with death if she doesn’t say “Javid Shah (Shah is eternal).
The monarchist in the video keeps telling Mona that she will run her over with a truck if she does not chant “Javid Shah.” Audios and images of other participants cheering the offender’s move have emerged.
Another woman participant at CPAC, Homeira Hesami, a physicist and a former political prisoner in Iran who has lived in the United States for decades, was approached by several Pahlavi supporters, asking her to chant “Shah is eternal” and that she should repeat it as often as she can, so that it will be a habit for her.
Another male supporter approaches her, asking why she talks to the media at the convention and what she told the media. The police had to intervene to protect her, as the male supporter repeatedly said, “she is a terrorist,” referring to Homeira, who is also chairwoman of the Iranian American Community of North Texas.
However, Homeira says, Pahlavi thugs’ intimidation tactics and threats in Western cities, from the United States to the UK, and from Germany to Scandinavian countries, have been so egregious and a dominant policy that during the Munich Security Conference in February 2026, Reza Pahlavi was asked on the stage about the “terrifying attacks” of his entire network everywhere against other Iranians.
So, the democracy and freedom Pahlavi promised for the future of Iran in his CPAC address is very much reminiscent of the SAVAK and torture that his father pursued when he built the Evin Prison, created SAVAK and torture centers, and dissolved all political parties except the Shah’s party.
Reza Pahlavi’s actions only benefit the ruling mullahs in Iran, helping the regime to maintain power, further prolonging the suffering of the Iranian people, and harming the international community. To achieve freedom in Iran and help peace and tranquility in Iran, the remnants of the Shah’s dictatorship, who act as an obstacle to change in Iran, must be rejected. The focus should be entirely on giving voice to those who are fighting the evil IRGC in Iran, instead of painting Iran’s dark past as its bright future. **
