IACNT celebrated the 50th anniversary of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK)

IACNT, August 30th, 2015- The People's Mojaheding Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) is an Iranian opposition group seeking to establish democracy in Iran. It was founded by a group of young students in 1965, and after 50 years of history it has become the largest and most organized opposition against Mullahs in Tehran. The PMOI became widely popular shortly after the 1979 Iranian revolution as their ideas such as gender equality, freedom of religion, speech, and assembly were highly valued by the Iranian people across the country.

The support for the MEK among Iranians continues to the day despite the fact that the regime has banned the organization inside Iran and any type of association with the group may be punishable by death.

Thousands of miles away from their motherland, numbers of Iranian-Americans gathered to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the organization and show their support for the PMOI’s fundamental cause of establishing a free, democratic and non-nuclear republic in Iran. In this gathering, a short history of the MEK was shown; Homeira Hesami, and Hassan Beheshti, human rights activists, also spoke to the audience on the occasion. Celebration continued by local artists playing traditional Persian instruments and singing classical songs.
